It’s unfortunate, the speed of which we humans are used to operating at these days. We jump to conclusions, we react immediately, we are impulsive, hasty, and abrupt.

We are know-it-alls. But that’s because we know what the hell we’re talking about, right? Right?

Depends, maybe we do. Maybe we don’t. It depends on your sphere of understanding, and the sphere is a very real thing, even if it’s only conceptual.

The Sphere of Understanding

Sphere

The sphere of understanding shown above is a high-level conceptual view. Each person’s sphere will vary. The sphere is also relational. It’s also a skill amongst many other things. It can be processed inside out, outside in, inside out and outside in, outside in and inside out, it’s a muscle; you can work it out in many ways.

Conceptually, the sphere is usually utilized from outside in. Most people tend to forget, at the very core we are all humans. We tend to react with our applied understanding—what we know and have applied in the past. Next, we divulge deeper, we are met with our practical understanding— we understand and can relate to the application and possible implications. Limited understanding, we are unable to relate but have just a ‘limited’ understanding. Once we are working our ways inwards, basic and foundational (human) are closely coupled, however there is distinct disparity between the two. Basic shows and helps you understand the foundational. Basic equips you with the proper tools needed to dig into foundational – it’s essentially a stepping stone to, foundational, also referred to as human, is the human reasoning behind what you, me or anyone else does. It’s the basic instinct. It’s our why.

‘Why do people do the things that they do’? It’s up to you to find out, if you so please.

‘If you don’t use it, you lose it’, in other words you could be left a small-minded person for the remainder of your life and it’s unfortunate how many succumb to this path. Similar to any other muscle and workout regime, it requires discipline to exercise this particular muscle.

It’s easier to tell someone their wrong, disagree, and or ignore, than to take a step back and try to understand them and or their perspective. We live in a fast moving instantaneous world—who has the time to slow down?

Wise folks do. Understanding, compassionate, perceptive, considerate, kind people do.

As mentioned, this sphere can be relational and advanced in many ways, or it can simply be a sporadic spiral of non-sense. The latter would apply to folks whom are commonly classified as mentally ill, ‘bi-polar’, Instagram Models, childish, small-minded, naïve, the Kardashian’s, ignorant, and amongst many other things.

You can either choose to be ignorant or educate yourself. What you learn from is how capable you are of understanding. What you gain is perspective, which in itself is a very valuable thing.

s2

Can you ‘walk a mile in someone else’s shoes’? Can you become the bigger person? These idioms have one common theme, and that is to be someone who is capable of understanding.

If you ‘walk a mile in someone’s shoes’ you are capable of perspective, you understand where they are coming from.

‘Being the bigger person’ can be applied in many situations and again, is relational, however one thing is for sure—you can become more understanding in the end, dependent on your sphere (level of understanding).

Let’s take a stab at a situation. You can be having a disagreement with a party and dependent on the context, lets presume you are correct and the other person is incorrect.

Chances are you will come to a point in the argument where you realize that you might not be getting through to the opposing party. At this juncture, you will have two options from here. Either to continue in hopes the other party will attempt to understand and learn from you or, for you to cut your losses and end the discussion. The differentiator between if you learn or gain anything from this depend upon how you approach the outcome. Same goes for the opposing party.

You can leave the discussion annoyed, irritated, that your time has been wasted or depending on how developed your sphere is, you could gain from this experience. What exactly could you gain from this? One thing is for sure, you now know to never bother arguing with this particular person, and going forward you will tend to avoid these situations with this party.

Perhaps, you continued this conversation the opposing party could possibly say something to trigger you to understand what they’re attempting to convey.

After all, the most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said.

s1

However, If the opposing party wanted to exercise their sphere, and they are after all in the wrong, the party could benefit from learning a thing or two from you. However, if the party doesn’t, you, the bigger person will feel pity for this person or group as this identifies them as small-minded and unwilling to learn.

Bear in mind, this situation can very well be reversed, so keep an open mind and even if you think you’re right, you could possibly learn and gain—and if two understanding parties had a disagreement, they both will take a step back, listen and work their sphere in attempts to gain understanding from one another.

As declared before, the sphere is very relational and sometimes it will take immense strength to try to understand someone and where they might possibly be coming from.

There will be things you are able to understand without much effort and be receptive of, and then there can be things where you’ve never exercised your sphere for.

What will differentiate you from your past self is your ability to react, process, comprehend and understand something that is a complete deviation or new from the norm. You will either expand your sphere or you will refuse to process and digest, leaving you with no understanding and have gained nothing.

You will either expand your sphere or you will refuse to process and digest, leaving you with no understanding and have gained nothing.

It’s all a matter of how hard and willing you are to go and attempt to understand. There are things you might understand, but are unwillingly to accept, which is OK. Accept no failure, but don’t be blinded.

The more understanding you gain, the more compassionate and kind you will tend to be, regardless if you want to just be a jerk, because let’s be honest – at times, it can be fun.

Guilty as charged.

However, I’m thrilled to admit that being an understanding person and working my sphere has helped me in more ways than I could possibly begin to fathom.

Most notably, in my career- it has given me the uncanny ability to nearly be telepathic to a degree. Ranging from knowing what our client/boss needs or wants and it doesn’t end there. If you know what your boss, client or customer wants, chances are you can put yourself ‘in their shoes’ and know exactly what they might ask for next.

This puts you in a position in which you’ll always be a step ahead, it makes you proactive, forces you to think ahead and go as far calculating risks, circumstances, and piece everything together. You gain perspective, you learn.

It’s called going the extra mile. Many claim they go the extra mile, yet the mile remains barren.

s3

Understanding also builds character. You will be recognized for the uncanny ability to not just help others, but understand them; which includes the reasons people do what they do. It makes you relatable and opens channels of communications and networks which you might have never thought of before.

As shown, exercising this sphere can net you many benefits, again, it takes focus, determination and discipline to continue exercising this muscle along with every other thing you need to continuously do to better yourself. Even in your darkest hours, where the cards are stacked against you and things are looking grim, what will set you apart is how disciplined you are. ‘If you’re going through hell, keep going.’

It’s ever-evolving, and growing. The only limit it has is yourself, you can either be the bottleneck or push yourself to find out what you’re capable of.

This might sound all too obvious, but, if it is—why are there so many small-minded folks? Why are people close-minded? Well… it can be due to a number of things, so let’s stop being ignorant and open our minds to begin understanding…
